BREAK GLASS FOR TOMORROW
On the corner of Fourth and Empty stood a red glass box labeled IN CASE OF TOMORROW. No one knew who installed it. Most assumed it was a municipal joke, which was how the city handled objects it did not understand.
Jules passed the box every morning on the way to work. One Tuesday, after learning that the bakery had closed and her friend Iris had moved without saying goodbye, she threw a rock through the glass.
Inside was a paper ticket. It read: VALID FOR ONE DAY NOT YET LIVED. NONREFUNDABLE.
The world stopped. Pigeons hovered midwing and a cyclist hung in the air as if painted there. A voice from the broken cabinet said Jules could spend tomorrow early, or give it to a stranger who had none left. In the silence, she realized how little of her own Tuesday she had noticed.
